Open Insulin

  • ReaGent 97 Brusselsepoortstraat Gent, Vlaanderen, 9000 Belgium (map)

Open Insulin is an initiative to make insulin more affordable for poorer communities by making the means of production freely available.

The goal of the project is to research and develop an alternative pathway for production of insulin. The outcomes of the research will be made available for everyone as open source knowledge.

During this first informal meeting we will plan our contribution to the project with a Belgian chapter. Bring your friends, brains, cat and creativity.

Programme:
20u overview & story of Open Insulin
20u15 discussion
20u45 forge plans, have drinks

"According to the International Diabetes Federation, there are 382 million people with diabetes worldwide. Affordable, generic insulin remains elusive on account of patent laws and serious technical challenges in production.

The high cost of proprietary insulin puts access out of reach for many, especially in the developing world. The effects of poor diabetes management include severe cardiovascular disease, kidney failure, nerve damage, blindness, amputations of the extremities, coma, and death."

The Open Insulin project started in San Fransisco in 2015. They've made quite some technological progress and now they could use some help. We reached out to the Open Insulin team and Belgium will be the third group (after one in Sydney) to join this international citizen driven research collaboration.
